Building on interdisciplinary collaborations across campus made possible through the Portuguese Flagship Program, UGA is one of eight universities nationwide to be recognized for its exemplary international programs and partnerships by NAFSA, a nonprofit association dedicated to international education:

The university’s network of partnerships within the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais received NAFSA’s 2018 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award, which is named after the late Illinois senator who was a strong advocate for international education and cross-cultural learning.

Study offers new insight into brain architecture and function

Great collaboration from computer science and engineering faculty:

The researchers in UGA’s College of Engineering and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ department of computer science say their study is the first to identify specific areas they call “three hinges.” They believe these junctions of three ridges along the brain’s surface play an important role in how the brain forms as well as how it works.

“The traditional way of describing brain structure assumes the creases and folds of the cortex perform similar functions,” said Xianqiao Wang, an assistant professor...

The College of Pharmacy is home to a new campus-wide collaborative facility designed to hasten the development of therapeutic drugs for a number of major diseases, the Drug Discovery Core laboratory:

A survey distributed to UGA researchers in 2016 identified chemical screening and toxicity profiling as the most critical needs for enhancing drug discovery research at UGA, and the DDC will address many of those needs for faculty working in infectious disease, regenerative medicine, cancer biology and other human health-focused disciplines.

Phase one of the new lab will allow...

With new adaptive learning tools in the classroom, students across disciplines work together to complete research projects:

While researchers often have an opportunity to collaborate with other researchers from disciplines outside of their own, this is not always the case for students in the classroom. Arnold, alongside Juan Gutierrez and Art Edison, wanted to change the routine method of learning and set out to create an immersive learning environment using two unique technological learning tools.

When students arrive to class, they are given an assessment to see what they...

The Simons Foundation has established a new collaboration investigating the mysteries of the microscopic communities that produce more than half of Earth’s oxygen, form the base of the marine food web and cycle nutrients through the ecosystem. The Simons Collaboration on Theory of Microbial Ecosystems, or THE-ME, will investigate how microbial ecosystems in the oceans form and function.

The new collaboration will seek answers to three main questions: How are functions distributed in a microbial ecosystem? How does resource supply shape microbial ecosystem structure and function? And...
