Slingshot Festival

The third annual Slingshot festival got off to a rousing start last night and the action continues through Saturday:

Musical highlights of the festival will include DJ sets by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and DJ Windows 98 (Win Butler of Arcade Fire) as well as performances by Jamie XX, Nosaj Thing and Reptar. Comedy Night headliners include Kyle Kinane, Ron Funches and Kurt Braunohler. The festival will screen "Salad Days," a documentary about the Washington, D.C., punk scene.

Electronic art offerings include new work by designer Kyle McDonald, video artist Andy Thomas...

UGA Opera Theatre brings the rarely-performed opera in three acts L'amico Fritz to the Fine Arts Theatre Feb. 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. with a matinee performance Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.

"I have wanted to bring this particular opera to UGA ever since I arrived here," said Frederick Burchinal, the Wyatt and Margaret Anderson Professor in the Arts and Opera Theatre director. "I had the opportunity to perform it with the San Francisco Opera in 1976 and fell in love with it. Now, we have the students in place to bring it to life."

Thursday the 12th at 4 pm, we're all going to the Chapel for a conversation between great friends of the blog Patterson Hood and Ann Powers:

Ann Powers of NPR and musician Patterson Hood will hold a public conversation on "Our Back Pages: The Music, Books and Movies That Fed Two Creative Lives" Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in the University of Georgia Chapel.

The event is part of the Global Georgia Initiative, the signature speaker series of the UGA Jane and Harry Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.

The Willson Center for the Humanities and Arts has taken our soon-to-be three-year-old Spotlight on the Arts festival up to the mountaintop, wizened it beyond its years into a learned and marvelous, venerable arts festival joining the best of campus with some of the greatest parts of Athens (as we know it) and brought it back to College Square for an unimaginably fantastic concert this week:
