One of the great campus joys of the holiday season happens this week, when the UGA Symphony Orchestra (UGASO), Combined Choirs, British Brass Band and more—take to the stage for the annual UGA Holiday Concerts:

The concerts, part of the Hodgson School’s flagship Thursday Scholarship Series, open in grand fashion with the UGA Combined Choirs and UGASO performing holiday standards as well as works from Leroy Anderson, Gerald Finzi and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The UGA Opera Theatre returns to Hodgson Concert Hall for the Thursday Scholarship Series, performing two one-act comic operas—Mozart's "The Impresario" and Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi"—in two performances on October 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. 

The Opera Theatre will combine with the UGA Symphony Orchestra to stage these opera masterpieces, semi-staged with English supertitles. This is the first time the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s opera ensemble has performed two operas for its major fall production.

The October concert by the Hodgson Wind Ensemble is built around a special program drawing on jazz, salsa and gospel:

The concert comprises several exciting and provocative 20th century works, including Dana Wilson’s “Concerto for Trombone,” featuring Joshua Bynum, associate professor of trombone at the School of Music.   The program begins with Ingolf Dahl’s “Sinfonietta,” written in 1961. The UGA Performing Arts Center and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music jointly kick off the performance season next week on August 25 with a collaborative musical journey through American band music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries:
