Winner of a 2017 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study, doctoral student Brittany Jenkins is committed to a career in medical research:

My research on the genetics of breast cancer health disparities has allowed me to travel many places to further my training. I am currently located in Detroit, Michigan, where I am continuing my dissertation work at Henry Ford Health System under my adviser, Dr. Melissa Davis. Moving here has afforded me an excellent opportunity to interact and network with top oncologists and clinicians, patients and other personnel...

Irma teaser.jpg

An important question with relevance throughout our region is the focus of a new research collaboration: Why do some people living in the path of a major hurricane decide to evacuate while others stay put?

Prashant Doshi, a professor of computer science, and professor of psychology Adam Goodie are gathering information about residents in areas hit by hurricanes Irma and Harvey to learn more about how people make decisions in risky situations. This will ultimately help officials and emergency personnel better manage evacuations in the future.

"This research will improve our...

With new adaptive learning tools in the classroom, students across disciplines work together to complete research projects:

While researchers often have an opportunity to collaborate with other researchers from disciplines outside of their own, this is not always the case for students in the classroom. Arnold, alongside Juan Gutierrez and Art Edison, wanted to change the routine method of learning and set out to create an immersive learning environment using two unique technological learning tools.

When students arrive to class, they are given an assessment to see what they...

Asparagus teaser.jpg

New research from an international team of breeders, genome scientists, and plant biologists at UGA sheds light on longstanding questions about the origin and early evolution of sex chromosomes, and at the same time serves as a foundation for asparagus breeding efforts:

While most flowering plants are hermaphrodites, garden asparagus plants are typically either male (XY) or female (XX), although YY "supermales" can be produced in the greenhouse. Growers prefer all-male plants, as they live longer and do not self-seed. Breeders produce all-male XY seed by crossing an XX female, with...
