Kent De
Spain has toured throughout the United States, including performances
at Judson Church, the North Carolina Dance Festival, and Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival (in the 1997 premiere of Ralph Lemon's "So
this is a hero"). Dr. De Spain holds the Ed.D. degree from
the dance department at Temple University in Philadelphia
and M.A. and B.A. degrees from the University of California,
Los Angeles. He has served as Guest Artist at the University
of North Carolina in Greensboro and has just completed a one
year post-doctoral fellowship in the dance department at Ohio
State University where he directed an improvisational performance
ensemble. As a choreographer De Spain has been the recipient
of several awards, including a fellowship from the Philadelphia
Repertory Development Initiative, the Pew Fellowship in the
Arts, and an Established Choreographers Fellowship from the
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. De Spain is author of a
1992-94 series of Contact Quarterly articles about
movement improvisation. His "Dance and Technology: A Pas de
Deux for Post-humans" is published in the Summer 2000 issue
of the Dance Research Journal published by the International
Congress on Research in Dance.
