Letter of Introduction

Dear Prospective Student:

I was pleased to learn of your interest in our program and invite you to acquaint yourself with our offerings by reading the enclosed data sheets. With a full-time faculty of five, five studios, one studio performance space, yearly access to the UGA Fine Arts Theatre, and a tradition of talented and creative student dancers, DANCE at GEORGIA has much to offer.

Dance majors at the University of Georgia complete a dance performance-based curriculum. Coursework in ballet and modern dance far outweighs that in the other styles, but ballroom, jazz, tap, and world dance forms are also included in requirements for the major. Complementing such technical training are courses in dance composition and performance and courses which illuminate dance's unique connections to science, technology, history, and the other arts.

Because the pursuit of dance in an academic setting makes considerable demands upon the major student, advising is necessarily personal and occurs on a regular basis. The department offers ample opportunity for students to grow as performers, and students receive ongoing assessment of their progress as dancers and artists. Major and minor students gain invaluable performance experience in at least one of the department's companies - UGA Concert Dance Company, CORE Concert Dance Company, UGA Ballet Ensemble, Ballroom Performance Group, and Young Choreographer's Series - described on the enclosed data sheets.

Foremost criteria for entrance into the major and minor program is acceptance to the University of Georgia through the Office of Admissions. We have contacted that office and you should be receiving material soon. The Dance Department requires an audition for acceptance into the major program and offers one-two scholarships for each class year. Enclosed data sheets answer questions regarding the application process.

There is no better way to get to know a university and a department than to visit and take classes. If you find it convenient to visit campus, please be in touch with me beforehand so that we might arrange an appointment. I hope to see you then, as well as at one of the scheduled auditions.

Sincerely,

Janet Robertson
