Leonard Cohen Seminar: Fall 2007

In the spring of 2007 Elizabeth Kraft, Professor of English, offered a first-year seminar devoted to the songs of Leonard Cohen. She called it "The Tower of Song: The Poetry of Leonard Cohen." Her focus was on Cohen's lyrics and how they function as poetry. Click here to view the syllabus for the course.

On April 8, 2008, nearly a year after the seminar had ended, Dr. Kraft and her students reconvened at Tasty World in downtiown Athens to commemorate Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Students read from Cohen's poetry and and performed his songs. Ashton May, a student in the class, performed three of Cohen's songs. Links to those performances are below:

"Lady Midnight"

"Hallelujah"

"Famous Blue Raincoat"
