Outstanding First-Year Seminar Instructor Awards

In 2007 the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors Program for the first time offered three awards to outstanding first-year seminar instructors.  The awards included a certificate presented at the spring awards luncheon for the College and a $1000 research/travel support award for use during the subsequent academic year.

The 2007 winners of the Outstanding First-Year Seminar Awards:

  • Robert Shewfelt, Food Science and Technology (School of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences), for seminars on "Chocolate Science."

  • (Joint Award) Mark Farmer (Cellular Biology)  and Juergen Wiegel (Microbiology), for their seminars on “The Origins of Life.”

  • Betty Jean Craige, Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and Dept of Comparative Literature, for seminars on “The Desegregation of the University of Georgia,” “The Ideas of Daniel Quinn,” and “The Environmentalism of Barbara Kingsolver.”

The 2008 winners of the Outstanding First-Year Seminar Awards:

  • E. M. Beck (Sociology), for seminars on “Klansmen, Neo-Nazis, and Today’s White Supremacy Movement” and on "The American South."

  • Marcus Fechheimer (Cellular Biology), for his "Life Sciences Learning Community" seminar.

  • Kenneth Honerkamp (Religion), for his seminar on "Introduction to Essential Islamic Spirituality."

  • Janice Simon (Lamar Dodd School of Art), for seminars on "The Art of Alfred Hitchcock," "Looking at Art in Museums," and "The Art Experience" for the Learning Community program.

Awards were made on the basis of participation in the program, quality and innovativeness of the seminars as reflected by materials submitted, and evaluations, if available.  Click here to read the press release for the 2007 awards.

These awards will be made on a continuing annual basis. Applicants or nominees are encouraged to submit a sample syllabus for one or more seminars, a short statement about their approach to the seminars, and any other relevant supporting materials.  The applications should be limited to 5 pages total.  Electronic submissions are preferred.  The deadline for 2009 awards will be announced soon. Please send questions to dgoswick@franklin.uga.edu or to 320A Old College.  Thank you.
