Dell Recommendations

The College strongly recommends Dell OptiPlex and Latitude models over Dell Dimension and Inspiron models. OptiPlex and Latitude models guarantee hardware homogeneity; in other words, if you order identical models, you will receive identical models. Buying an OptiPlex or Latitude ensures that you will have access to that model for a 6 - 16 month period; Dimension and Inspiron models change every 2 - 3 months.

If your department uses software imaging to manage computer labs or other desktops, the longer lifecycle will be an advantage if you need to replace or add computers. The Latitude and OptiPlex lines are subjected to extensive quality testing to verify that they are fully compatible with supported operating systems. Plus, Dell's warranty covers networking for OptiPlex and Latitude models, but not for Dimension and Inspiron models.
