California professor to lecture on alternative food at UGA
Julie Guthman, an associate professor in the community studies department at the University of California at Santa Cruz, will deliver the first Fred E. Dohrs lecture in economic geography on Friday, Nov. 6, at 3:30 p.m. in room 200C of the Geography-Geology Building on the University of Georgia campus.

UGA department of dance presents RE:flexion
The UGA dance senior exit concert, titled “RE:flexion,” will be held Nov. 11-13 at 8 p.m. at the New Dance Theater in the Dance Building on Sanford Drive. The event will premiere choreography prepared by nine students throughout the fall semester to fulfill their final dance degree requirements.
Global and Contemporary Freedom Struggles topic of UGA conference
A three-day conference called “Beyond the Movement: Global and Contemporary Freedom Struggles,” will take place on the University of Georgia campus on Nov. 7-9.

Georgia writer and UGA assistant dean Philip Lee Williams will be the guest on Georgia Public Broadcasting’s “Cover to Cover” program on Sunday evening, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. The show will be heard on GPB’s statewide network of stations and can be heard as well in a streaming audio format on GPB’s website at http://www.gpb.org/radio.
Photographic pioneer James Casebere to visit UGA
Noted American photographer James Casebere, one of the pioneers of set-up photography, will spend the week of Nov. 2 at the University of Georgia as a visiting artist in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Casebere will interact with students and faculty in critiques and give a public lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in room S151 of the art school. The lecture is free and the public is invited to attend.
UGA researcher wins stimulus funding for stem cell research that may lead to new therapies
Stephen Dalton, University of Georgia professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar of Molecular Biology, has received a $600,000 federal stimulus grant to accelerate research into a type of stem cell that can turn into virtually any cell type.
UGA to dedicate new Redcoat Marching Band field
The University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band will dedicate its new practice field at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the intramural fields off College Station Road. The event will feature a performance of the band’s halftime show, refreshments and remarks by UGA President Michael F. Adams; Dale Monson, director of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music; and band members Katie Rogers and Christina Swoope.
Noted researcher to speak at UGA on Nov. 6
James Ihle of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., will present the second annual Marquee Alumnus seminar in room C127 of the Davison Life Sciences Complex on the University of Georgia campus at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.
