UGA CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR DORE RECEIVES NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION’S EARLY CAREER AWARD

ATHENS, Ga. –Timothy M. Dore, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Georgia, has received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award titled “CAREER: Controlling Biological Effectors with Light.”

The CAREER Program offers the NSF’s most prestigious awards for new faculty members. It recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. CAREER awardees are selected on the basis of creative career-development plans that effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their organization.

“I am delighted that Timothy Dore has received this honor from the National Science Foundation,” said Dean Wyatt Anderson of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. “It is an important award, and it points out yet again the strength of our programs here at UGA.”

Dore’s research seeks to develop new photochemical technology to investigate biological function. He and his coworkers will synthesize, study and develop new applications for photochemically active molecules, particularly those capable of directing the action of physiological messengers.

The work is multidisciplinary in nature, involving organic chemistry, photochemistry and molecular and cell biology. Integrated with the research is an educational plan that will train students to become outstanding scholars with depth and breadth of scientific knowledge. It also aims to bridge the gap between undergraduate and graduate science programs and encourage undergraduate science majors to pursue a Ph.D. Dore will develop a series of programs that highlight the exciting career paths of doctorate recipients and provide practical information for navigating the Ph.D. process.

“Tim is a young lion, he puts everything he has got into what he does, whether it is teaching, research or soccer,” said John Stickney, head of the chemistry department. “We need more like him.”

Dore’s research group is comprised of UGA students Brandi Villarreal, Yue Zhu, Asher Newsome, Phanneth Som, Chetan Darne, Khalilah Reddie and Min Lu.

More information about Dore's research program can be found at www.chem.uga.edu/doc/ResFacTMD.html. Information about the NSF CAREER Program can be found at www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/career/start.htm.
