UGA HONORS STUDENT AMANDA CASTO RECEIVES GATES CAMBRIDGE
SCHOLARSHIP
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia Honors student Amanda Morgan
Casto has received the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. This is the third
national scholarship awarded to UGA students in the last week.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship, established in 2000 by the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation through a $210 million gift to the University
of Cambridge, enables outstanding graduate students from outside the
United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The scholarships
are awarded on the basis of a student’s intellectual ability,
leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute
to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities
and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others.
“University of Georgia Honors students have enjoyed another
extraordinary year of success in national and international scholarship
competitions,” said President Michael F. Adams. “The University
community celebrates these outstanding achievements.”
Casto, daughter of Stephen and Anna Casto of Anderson, S.C., is a
senior majoring in genetics and cellular biology. She is a Foundation
Fellow and Ramsey Scholar and last year received the Barry M. Goldwater
Scholarship. She currently works in the genetics lab of UGA professor
Janet Westpheling.
“Amanda’s success is not only a testament to her outstanding
record, but a testament to the many faculty mentors who have worked
closely with her over the past four years,” said Jere Morehead,
director of the Honors Program and associate provost at UGA.
