Lilburn resident Adam Gobin, a biology and Spanish major
in UGA' s Franklin College, is chosen 2005 homecoming king
Athens, Ga. -- Adam Gobin, a fourth-year double-major in biology
and Spanish at the University of Georgia' s Franklin College of
Arts and Sciences, has been crowned king of the 2005 UGA Homecoming
Court. Gobin, whose sponsor is the Caribbean Student Association,
is currently a resident of Lilburn and is originally from Trinidad
and Tobago.
Gobin was chosen as one of 10 individuals (five men and five women)
by the homecoming committee of the University Union to sit on this
year' s homecoming court. He was elected homecoming king through
on-line student elections, the results of which were announced at
halftime during UGA' s homecoming game against Arkansas on Saturday,
Oct. 22, in Sanford Stadium.
A total of 60 students applied; each applicant was required to
complete a questionnaire and write an essay regarding their feelings
on the meaning of "homecoming." After a review of the
essays and group interviews, the pool was narrowed to 10 women and
10 men, who were then interviewed individually. The selection committee
chose the final 10 individuals "who exemplify the qualities
that the University of Georgia seeks to instill in all the individuals
who pass through its famous Arch."
In his application essay, Gobin says the dictionary defines home
as "a place where something flourishes. When people look at
me in a confused manner and ask me why I chose to leave my hometown
and come to the University of Georgia, I simply tell them that UGA
is my new home. Homecoming for me is coming to a new home that is
going to help me flourish during my years and leave me with much
wisdom, knowing that I did myself justice through my actions in
moderation." Gobin continues, saying "I have never made a better choice
in my life, coming from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean to
this incredible university, which is equipped with the right opportunities
to prepare me for the future."
A resident assistant at Oglethorpe House residence hall for the
past three years, Gobin is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta (Premed
club); Beta Beta Beta (biological honors society); American Medical
Student Association; Advocating Safe Alternatives for Peers; National
Society of Collegiate Scholars; Caribbean Student Association; World
Ambassadors; UGA Honors Program; Minority Premed Students Association;
UGA Diversity Council; South Eastern Model African Union delegation;
National Residence Hall; LeaderShape; and the UGA orientation team.
His honors include national dean' s list; UGA' s dean' s
list; UGA Presidential Scholar; International Student Life Leadership
Award; Resident Assistant of the Year (runner-up award, 2003-04);
and Award for Motivation at Annual Resident Assistant Awards Banquet.
