UGA student wins travel stipend from Geographical Society

Athens, Ga. – Joshua Durkee, a doctoral candidate in the Climate Research Laboratory of the department of geography at the University of Georgia, has been awarded a travel stipend, which he used to attend the annual conference of the Association of American Geographers in Boston this month.

The award was given by the Clarke County Geographical Society, which is the smallest county represented in the national organization.

The award is based on the highest quality graduate student abstract submitted to the Boston meeting, a conference which draws an annual attendance of more than 7,000 geographers.

The title of Durkee’s presentation at the meeting was “Climatological Variations in Subtropical South American Precipitation Attributed from Mesoscale Convective Complexes.” His major professor at UGA is Thomas Mote.

The award was presented by James O. Wheeler, director of the Clarke County Geographical Society and professor emeritus of geography at UGA.
