Academic Advising

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why can I not be advised before Orientation?

Orientation is designed to assist students with becoming familiar with ALL the aspects of being a student at the University of Georgia. There are thousands of students admitted to the University each year. Orientation is designed to best meet the needs of all these students, including how they will be advised. While we understand that many students are very excited about attending the University, it only puts a student at a disdvantage if they attempt to be advised before Orientation. All questions regarding the University as a whole and specific degree programs will be thoroughly answered at Orientation.

In the mean time, new students are encouraged to check into the degree requirements for the major they have declared. The bulletin, found at www.bulletin.uga.edu is a online resource that explains every program of study offered at the University of Georgia.
  2. Who will my advisor be at Orientation?

Franklin College determines who will advise new students during Orientation based on your major. Each Franklin College student receives a letter when they arrive at Orientation that explains what major they currently have delcared, who their advisor will be, and what time they are scheduled to meet with them.

  3. When will I find out what time my advising appointment is?

Each Franklin College student receives a letter when they arrive at Orientation that explains what major they currently have delcared, who their advisor will be, and what time they are scheduled to meet with them.

If a student has a scheduling conflict with the time of their advising appointment, they should do the follwing:

For First Year students- Visit "The HUB" located in the central lobby on the second floor of the Student Learning Center between 8:30am-12pm on Day 2 of Orientation. No schedule changes will be made BEFORE the second day.

For Transfer Students- Visit "The HUB" located in the central lobby on the second floor of the Student Learning Center between 8:30am-12pm on the day of Orientation.

  4. How do I register for an Orientation Session?

Students can register for Summer and Fall 2008 Orientation at: http://www.admissions.uga.edu/orientation/

Each Orientation Session has a limited number of spaces.

Orientation is a University of Georgia requirement.

  5. How do I change my major at Orientation?

For First Year Students- Admissions will accept any major changes during Orientation. You MUST then visit "The HUB" located in the central lobby on the second floor of the Student Learning Center between 8:30am-12pm on Day 2 of Orientation to reschedule your advisement. You can also change your major at "The HUB".

For Transfer Students- Admissions has certain restrictions on changing your major. Please visit "The HUB" located in the central lobby on the second floor of the Student Learning Center between 8:30am-12pm on the day of Orientation for more information.
