Laura Dowd joined the Franklin College advising office in 1983 and has advised a wide variety of majors, most recently theatre, film, music, and psychology.  Ms. Dowd also taught SOCI 1101 at UGA for many years.  Since August 2006, Ms. Dowd has served as Coordinator of the Academic Advising office.

Ms. Dowd received the Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Academic Advising from the Office of the Vice President for Instruction in 2001 and 2006.  She was a recipient of the Student Government Association Annual Teacher Recognition Award in 2001 and a nominee for the Special Sandy Beaver Teaching Award, Franklin College of Arts & Sciences in 2000.

With James J. Dowd, she authored "The Center Holds:  From Subcultures to Social Worlds," which was published in the journal Teaching Sociology, Volume 31, 2001.

Ms. Dowd is a native of New Jersey and has a BA in sociology from Georgian Court College in Lakewood, N.J. and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Maryland.
