University of Georgia Prelaw Guide
Chapter 2
THE PRELAW ADVISING PROGRAM
You are a prelaw student if you intend to go
on to law school after you receive an undergraduate degree. The
Prelaw Advising Program is provided
to help students of all academic majors explore the possibility
of attending law school, move through the application process,
and prepare for law school and the legal profession. The program
provides assistance and support in several ways:
Prelaw Listserv
- The prelaw listserv is the primary means of communication between
the prelaw advisor and the prelaw student community. Notices
of events on and off campus, application tips and calendars,
and information on academic programs of interest to prelaw students
are among the information disseminated on the listserv. To subscribe,
go to listserv.uga.edu and type in prelaw-l.
Prelaw Orientations
- Prelaw Orientations are held three times every semester, and provide information concerning
the legal profession, possible Prelaw majors and courses, the Law School Admission
Test (LSAT), Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS), applying to law school,
and membership in Phi Alpha Delta, the prelaw fraternity. Dates and location are on the home page of the prelaw website.
Prelaw Workshops
- Group workshops will be held on topics of particular interest for both under and upperclassmen prelaw students, including law school selection, financial aid, and personal statement composition. Notice of time and location will be provided on the prelaw listserv.
Individual Advising Appointments
- Individual Advising Appointments may be made with the prelaw
advisor throughout the year. The prelaw advisor is Teresa Angle, J.D. and her office is located in 207 Memorial Hall. The advisor is available to explain further
any printed information, as well as to facilitate and assist
you throughout the process of applying to law school. Appointments
may be made online through the SARA system for Franklin College
students, and others may schedule an appointment by calling the
Prelaw Advising Office main number at (706)542-5836. .
Personal Statement / Application Essay Critiques
- The prelaw advisor will provide guidance, review, and feedback on application essays and personal statements. An initial advising appointment is needed to discuss the statement, though further review may be done via email. A week is the turn-around time needed for this service, so plan accordingly.
Resource Library
- Resources are available to you such as general materials concerning law school,
the official LSAT/LSDAS Registration Book, and catalogues from various law schools.
Many items are available for you to pick up in the advisor's
office. The prelaw advisor keeps other materials such as the most current Reference
Books on the law schools and the current year's catalogues in her office for
your use.
Law School Forum / On campus law school visits
- A Law School Forum is held on campus on the Monday following the LSAC Regional Forum held in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, admissions representatives from various law schools visit the UGA campus to speak to prelaw students. Dates and locations will be posted on the listserv and the web site.
Dean's Letter of Certification
- A Dean's Letter of Certification is required
by many law schools before admission. The letters may be taken or mailed to Judical Programs, 130 in Memorial Hall. If you are in another college, you should
discuss this with the Dean's Office in your School or College. Click here for
more information on processing Dean's Letters.
Phi Alpha Delta, Prelaw Fraternity
- A chapter of Phi
Alpha Delta, the international prelaw fraternity, is active
on campus. The prelaw advisor is their faculty advisor, and
can provide information on the fraternity and its scheduled
meetings.
