(If you have already read the rules & completed
your contract,
GO TO THE EVENTS LIST.)

The Franklin College of Arts & Sciences Residence Hall Cultural & Academic Events Program is designed to offer our students who live on campus the opportunity to participate in educational experiences beyond the classroom.  The intent of the program is to encourage students to choose from a wide variety of cultural Events, supplemental to their course requirements, which will enhance and enrich their college and life experiences.

(CLICK ON THE TOPICS BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.)

  • WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
  • WHAT MUST I DO TO JOIN THE PROGRAM?
  • Read all of the Rules and Regulations of the program.
  • Read the information.
  • Complete the Contract prior to attending your fourth Event
    • Save the Contract as a Word Document on your desktop.
    • Answer the questions.
    • Email the completed contract to CAEP@franklin.uga.edu
    • You only need to complete the contract one time, regardless of how many semesters you participate in the program.
    • You will be able to see in SARA when your contract has been received.
  • WHAT KIND OF EVENTS WILL I BE ABLE TO CHOOSE FROM?
  • The program includes a wide variety of Events.  You should be able to find something that will interest you.  Typically, each semester offers:
    • Lectures, readings & discussions
    • Concerts & recitals
    • Films
    • Dance & theatre productions
    • Museum & planetarium tours/talks
    • Ethnic festivals
    • Art exhibits & gallery talks
  • WHAT DO I NEED TO DO WHEN I ATTEND AN EVENT?
  • Bring a pen or pencil.  The Event Host cannot be responsible for providing writing implements for all attendees.
  • Arrive early enough at the Event to check in with the Host.
    • Come at least 15 minutes early to allow for parking, etc.
    • It is your responsibility to find the Host before the Event to pick up a Blue Card.
      • The Host will be in a conspicuous location (with Cards in hand.)
      • Cards will not be given out once the event has started.
      • You will not receive credit for attending if you are late.

  • Pick up a Blue Card

  • Remain through the entire Event.
    • There is no guarantee about how long an Event will last.
      • Some may last an hour and a half, some may last 45 minutes.
      • Do not assume that an Event will be over quickly.  Schedule wisely.
      • Do not plan to attend if the Event conflicts with class or other appointments.
      • Some Events will have a Q & A afterward or an encore.
        • The Host will determine when it is appropriate to leave.  Watch for a signal.
    • Do not disrupt the Event if you must leave early.
    • You will not receive credit for attending if you leave before the proper time.
  • Return the Blue Card to the Host immediately after the Event.
    • Write legibly.  If we cannot read your name, we cannot enter it correctly in our database.
    • Remember that you signed the University’s Code of Conduct as part of your application for admission.
      • We expect you to be honorable in your participation in this program.
      • At the discretion of the Host, you may not receive credit for attending the Event if:
        • you do not complete your card correctly
        • you arrive late or leave early.
        • you do not behave in a manner that reflects favorably on the Franklin College and the program.
        • you attempt to bypass the regulations of the program, e.g.  by turning in cards other than your own.
      • The Host will remain (in the same conspicuous location where you picked up your Blue Card before the Event) for a few minutes afterward.
      • Turn your card in as soon as possible.  Visit with your friends later.  Do not expect the Host to remain for an extended period of time or to search for you.
      • You are not allowed to turn your card in later at your advising office.

Remember that you alone are responsible for your Blue Card and for maintaining the integrity of your attendance record at the Event.
  • HOW MANY EVENTS MUST I ATTEND?
  • You must attend at least twelve Events each semester to successfully complete the requirements of the program.
  • No more than three of these may be chosen from those listed as “Residence Hall” in the Events list.
  • No more than two may be chosen from the “Ticketed Event” list.
  • You must include at least one Event from each of the three types. The types include:
    • Fine Arts
      • Art
      • Dance
      • Festival
      • Film
      • Music
      • Theatre
    • Discussion
      • Lecture
      • Forum/Panel
      • Reading
      • Tour
    • Personal Enrichment
      • Residence Hall Event
      • Career Center Event

NOTE: While you may wish to attend more than the required number of Events, they will not carry over from one semester to the next.
  • WHAT IS A “TICKETED EVENT”?
  • Some Events require that you obtain a ticket (either free or at a cost).
  • You may count up to two of these Events toward your total of twelve.
  • You are responsible for obtaining your own ticket.
    • Tickets for many Events are specially priced for UGA students.  You are required to show your UGA card at the box office to qualify for student ticket prices.
    • You must submit your ticket and a brief critique of the Event to your advising office during the week immediately following the Event in order to receive credit.
    • You are not required to attend any Ticketed Events.
    • You are not required to obtain a Blue Card for Ticketed Events.
  • WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME AT THE EVENTS?
  • See the Etiquette for attending Events
  • You will be required to submit a Reaction Journal with a short essay (+/- 250 words) expressing your response to each Event. Your response should indicate how you felt about the Event, not just what occurred there.
    Sample Reaction Journal entry.

  • Please attend Events only if you truly believe they will interest you.
    • Remember that you are representing the Franklin College and the CAEP at each Event so always be respectful of others in attendance
    • Participation and early registration are privileges, not rights, and your continuation in the program is contingent upon appropriate behavior at the Events.
  • Blue Card Limits: Some Events are held in venues that have capacity for a small number of audience memebers. Such Events will be limited in the number of Blue Cards that will be awarded. Notation will be made in the calendar for such Events. Because we do not want to risk having the Fire Marshall cite our Program for violations, do not ask the Event Host to go over this number.
  • WHAT HAPPENS IF AN EVENT IS CANCELLED?
  • This happens very rarely.
    • If we know ahead of time that an Event will be cancelled, we will make a notation on the online calendar, so be sure to check it before you set out.
    • Occasionally an Event will be cancelled at the last minute through no fault of the Cultural and Academic Events Program and/or without our knowledge.
      • You will not receive credit for such Events just because you showed up.
  • WHAT ELSE DO I HAVE TO DO AFTER I FINISH MY TWELVE EVENTS?
  • Complete your Response Journal.
  • Email your Journal to CAEP @franklin.uga.edu, as a Word attachment.
    • Make sure your name and your UGA ID number or the last four digits of your Social Security Number are on your Journal.  Never send your whole SSN in an email.
  • Hint:  As you attend your Events, you may want to keep a small notebook of the Events, times, dates, locations and your thoughts and impressions.  Not only will that help when you write your Journal entries, but also aids us in finding your Blue Card if an Event inadvertently is not entered into the database.
  • WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO REGISTER IF I COMPLETE ALL THE REQUIREMENTS?
  • Make sure you have scheduled an early advising appointment.
    • You must meet with your Advisor before you can be cleared for registration and if you wait to schedule an appointment, registration may be delayed even though you've completed all of the CAE Program requirement so schedule your advising appointment early.

    • Remember that your registration appointment time and your advising appointment time are not the same.
  • Program participants who complete all of the requirements and have been advised by the first day of registration will be cleared to register on the third day.  See www.reg.uga.edu/or.nsf/html/prereg for each semester’s dates.
  • If you begin the program early in the semester and plan ahead, it is much easier to finish by the early deadline.
  • If you do finish your Events early in the semester, please be patient about being cleared for registration. All students who have completed the requirements prior to the first day of registration will be cleared at the same time, regardless of when they finish.
  • WHAT IF I DO NOT FINISH ALL TWELVE EVENTS OR THE OTHER REQUIREMENTS BY THE FIRST REGISTRATION DATE?
  • In order to accommodate students who are not able to complete their requirements or who have not had their advising appointment by the early deadline, Events will continue until November 1st in the fall semester and April 1st in the spring semester.
  • Students will be cleared for registration within two work days after requirements are completed.
  • HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I HAVE GOTTEN CREDIT FOR ALL THE EVENTS I HAVE ATTENDED?
  • All your Events will be entered into the SARA system.  You should routinely check appoint.franklin.uga.edu to make sure they are all there.
  • Remember that a staff member must manually enter the Blue Card information into the database so it does not automatically appear there as soon as the Event is over.  Allow a day or so before becoming concerned.
  • Remember that some Events are sponsored by other departments and organizations and the Blue Cards must be sent through campus mail or other means before they can be entered.  It may take a few days for those Events to be posted.
  • A completed Events list will actually include fourteen notations - twelve Events, a Contract entry and a Journal entry. All requirements are not complete until your file contains all fourteen.
  • If an Event has not been entered within a week, email CAEP @franklin.uga.edu to inquire about it.  Be sure to include in your email the name date, time and location of the Event, and your name and your UGA ID number or the last four SSN digits .
WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR CONTRACT (PDF), VISIT THE CULTURAL & ACADEMIC EVENTS PAGE.

NOTES:

  • The information included in this list of Events was obtained from the sponsors.  Although we will strive for perfection, we cannot be responsible for any misinformation provided to us regarding dates, times and prices.
  • Occasionally, Events which are not Blue Carded will be on the list because they may be of special interest to Franklin College students. These WILL NOT count in your required 12 Events.
