College Preparatory Curriculum Requirements
Required College Prep Course of Study
Beginning in fall 2001, students graduating from high school who
plan to enroll in a University System research university, in a program
leading to the baccalaureate degree, must present 20 units, distributed
as follows:
Course Area (Units) and Instructional Emphasis
English (4)
- Grammar and usage
- Literature (American, English, and World)
- Advanced composition skills
Mathematics (4 )
- Algebra I, II and Geometry, at a minimum
Science (3)
- At least one laboratory course from the life sciences
- At least one laboratory course from the physical sciences
Social Science (3)
- United States Studies
- World Studies
- One additional unit
Foreign Language (2)
- Two courses in one language emphasizing speaking, listening,
reading, and writing
Other (4)
- In addition to the 16 specified units outlined above, students
applying to research universities must present four additional
academic Carnegie units, for a total of 20 units.
CPC Deficiency Requirements
Students admitted to the University in a "provisionary admission" category,
i.e. those who did not meet the College Preparatory Curriculum
(CPC) requirements in the course areas of science, social science
and foreign language, will be required to complete a three or
four semester hour course within the area of deficiency in order
to remove the CPC deficiency.
Registration Requirements for Deficiency-Removing Courses. While
deficiencies in science, social science and foreign language should be
satisfied during the student's first semester of enrollment,
CPC deficiencies for beginning freshmen must be completed
before the student has earned 30 semester hours of college-level
credit.
Non-transfer students. Non-transfer students who have
earned 30 semester hours of college-level credit and who have
not satisfied CPC deficiencies will not be allowed to register
for any college-level work unless also registered for the appropriate
deficiency-removing course(s)
Transfer students. Transfer students completing high
school in Spring 1988 or later, will be subject to CPC requirements
unless they have completed 30 semester hours of transfer credit
with a minimum 2.0 average.
Course Area Deficiency-Removing Courses.
