Information Concerning General Studies Requirements
(For students who entered college prior to Fall 1996)
ENG 101-102 (ENGL 1101 -1102)
All students must satisfy ENG 101 (ENGL 1101) with a C grade or better
and ENG 101/102 with a C average. Transfer students whose freshman
English did not transfer as equivalent to UGA's ENG 101/102 (ENGL
1101/1102)should contact Dr. Christy Desmet, Director of Freshman
English, Room 128 Park Hall. Students with credit for ENG 102 (ENGL
1102_, but lacking ENG 101 (ENGL 1101) credit should take the English
Placement test for possible exemption. Transfer students whotransfer
in credit for a three quarter hour ENG composition course designated
as ENG A should also see Dr. Desmet who will determine whether it
satisfies ENG 101 or 102 (ENGL 1101 or 1102).
CS A, etc.
Computer Science will not allow admissions-evaluated transfer CS
(CSCI) courses above the introductory level. The student should be
sent to the CS department to request transfer credit evaluation. Students
should submit a syllabus, final exam (or programs), and the textbook
title/author to the department for evaluation. Students should not
be advised for a CS course until the evaluation letter is in the folder.
MAT X
MAT X is the equivalent of UGA's MAT 102 taken at another institution
prior to Fall '88. The course title is "College Algebra." NOTE: MAT
X and MAT 102 are duplicate courses; credit may not be received for
both.
MAT Z
MAT denotes any other college math course for which UGA does not
have an equivalent, but which has a transferable algebra course as
its prerequisite. MAT Z may be used toward satisfaction of the basic
math requirement for the AB degree. MAT Z waives MAT 102.
MAT 100
MAT 100 - UGA's algebra before Fall 1988. MAT 100 satisfied the College
Algebra requirement before MAT 102 was offered. If transferred in,
the equivalent of MAT 100, taken Fall 1988 and after, will be a MAT "write-in" (MAT
A, for example) with a title. NOTE: Credit for both MAT 100 and 102
is allowed.
MAT A
MAT A is an elective unless otherwise approved by Dr. Malcolm Adams
in the Math department.
MAT 105 and MAT 106
As of Fall '94 MAT 105 and MAT 106 are independent courses. MAT 102
is prerequisite for both; MAT 105 is no longer prerequisite to 106.
MAT 105: Applications of mathematics to management and decision making.
MAT 106: Applications of number theory and geometry. Under the semester
course numbering, these two classes have been combined into MATH 1060.
MAT Waivers
Completion of MAT 253 (MATH 2200) satisfies the basic math requirement
for the AB or BS degree. It waives MAT 102 and 116 (MATH 1113) without
credit. Completion of any MAT course that has a prerequisite of MAT
102 will waive MAT 102. NOTE: Effective Fall '93, MAT 102 is no longer
required for either AB or BS degree, but needs to be taken or exempted
if it is prerequisite to a higher level course in the student's degree
program. The Math department will flag students who do not have the
proper prerequisites for math classes and discuss this with the student.
Literature
Only the numbered courses listed on the checksheets may be used to
satisfy degree requirements unless approved by the department in which
the course is taught. For approval the student should see the following
departmental advisor/department head: ENGL - Dr. Rosemary Franklin,
CLAS - Dr. Sally Spence, CMLT - Dr. Betty Jean Craige
Foreign Language
Completion of a course that has a prerequisite waives that prerequisite
course. Example: completion of SP 102 (SPAN 1002) waives 101 (1001).
By extension, completion of SP 301 (SPAN 3010) waives 101, 102, 103,
201, and 202 (1001, 1002, 2001, 2002) . If the degree requirement
for Foreign Language is satisfied by a waiver of 101-201 (1001 - 2002)(AB
degree) or 101-103 (1001 - 2001) (BS degree), all of the waived hours
must be made up in general electives to total 182 (121) hours required
for graduation.
History
Only courses with designated numbers, or HIS Z, may be used unless
approved by a departmental representative. Students wishing to use
400 (4000) level History for the core also need departmental approval.
HIS A
May be used for the core History requirement if departmentally approved.
It may be used as a BS core Social Science without prior approval.
HIS Z
HIS Z may be used in the HIS area; however, if HIS Z is on the record,
credit cannot be received for either HIS 251 or 252 (HIST 2111 OR
2112)
HIS 112
Although no longer offered at UGA, HIS 112 still transfers in. HIS
121/122 (HIST , covering the same time period, have replaced 112.
A student with 112 on record may not receive credit for either HIS
121 or 122.
Social Sciences
Any Social Science course may be used with any assigned course number
or letter. See checksheet.
Fine Arts
Any Fine Arts course may be used for the BS degree. Only designated
courses may be used for the AB degree without specific approval. For
courses transferred in as FA, request approval from Mrs. Michelle
Garfield Cook. For
ART, DRA, or MUS courses with letter designations, (ex., ART A, DRA
A, MUS A) refer to the appropriate department for approval. ART: Mr.
Rick Johnson, 114 Visual Arts; DRAM: Dr.Farley Richmond, Fine Arts
Building; MUS: Dr. John Culvahouse, School of Music
