Congratulations to Hugh Hodgson School of Music students in David Zerkel's Tuba-Euphonium studio, who took top honors at this summer's Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Festival. Big win: In what Professor David Zerkel refers to as an “unprecedented representation of prize winners from one studio,” four University of Georgia Tuba-Euphonium students have won top prizes at the Leonard Falcone Euphonium and Tuba Festival. Hodgson…
So this is pretty terrific. A live video feed, refreshed every five seconds, of the construction on the new Rutherford Hall. It's a great use of technology, courtesy of UGA housing. Here's a rendering of the final product, which looks quite similar to the original.   Rutherford Hall is, of course, home to the Franklin Residential College, a student-governed residential college with Franklin that offers a unique intellectual and cultural…

One of the most dynamic units in the Franklin College, indeed in the entire University, is the department of theatre and film studies. Long a mainstay on our campus, they have engaged our students, faculty and facilities to keep the campus and community entertained and informed for more than a century. Now in 2012, they announce their 80th season as University Theatre: The season's highlights include former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove's play "…
UGA senior Orry Young earned a leadership award from the U.S. Army Cadet Command after completing its Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as Operation Warrior Forge. The award was presented the Warrior Forge Commander's Leadership Award at the July 21 LDAC graduation at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. He was ranked No. 1 among more than 200 cadets in his training company at the 29-day LDAC program, the capstone training…

Per usual the very strong UGA swimming program will be well…
Students and alumni from the Franklin College are doing great things all over the world, here are examples from just two of those we heard about today: Jason Carter, a BFA student in painting and drawing at the Lamar Dodd School of Art has spent the summer working as a studio assistant for Berlin-based artist Michael Markwick. A selection of Jason's most recent works on paper will be on display July 22-23 at Studio M3 in Berlin, Germany. For…
Students and faculty at the University are fortunate in the extent to which UGA has embraced the importance of study abroad. An international academic experience intertwines crucial cultural elements with instruction in ways that are otherwise inaccessible for students, but also builds richness into the undergraduate experience that directly supports the well-rounded liberal arts education we speak and write about so often. Whether it is a…
The Lamar Dodd School of Art presents the exhibition "Tiny Universe," on view from June 20th to August 3rd in the Gallery 307 on the third floor of the school of art. The exhibition brings together six artists who use a variety of concepts and media to create a unique framework for understanding the world around us. Employing memory, experience, religion and humor, the artists in this show have essentially made their own universes for the…

A senior from Macon, Lauren Anderson is engaged with unique combination of opportunies at UGA to focus her studies at the confluence of U.S. foreign policy and the international politics of human rights. Lauren Anderson: Degree objective: A.B. in international affairs, A.B. in human geography, minor in African studies and anthropology   During fall semester of my sophomore year, I enrolled in Dr. Amy Ross’ geography of human rights…
The Franklin College is home to so many academic departments that we probably don't spend enough pixels talking about the many institutes, centers and programs also at the heart of student and faculty activity. I will attempt at least a partial remedy with periodic spotlights of our programs. Today: Atmospheric Sciences. The University of Georgia’s Atmospheric Sciences Program addresses the needs of students interested in studying meteorology…
Five UGA undergraduates werenamed 2012-13 NSEP Boren Scholars for study abroad - three of them from the Franklin College: Five University of Georgia undergraduates-a record number-will be spending the next academic year participating in language study abroad programs thanks to the National Security Education Program David L. It's the medium of the internet age, but still one we don't take enough advantage of: blogging. A funny argument to make on a blog, sure; but here I'm thinking specifically of a weblog as a kind of informational travelogue for students when they study abroad. Not only can you share photos and written descriptions of your experiences with family, friends and colleagues; a blog helps us all piece together and understand the story of what it is you…
During spring semester 2012 the University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) carried out its first Director’s Award, Future Scholar Award and Research Development Award competitions.  Undergraduate students compete annually for the Director’s Award, given to a LACS major who demonstrates superior academic achievement, and the Future Scholar’s Award, presented to a UGA student in any major for production of a…
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston used to have an ad campaign that hinted, "There's more to life than just Monet." In a similar vein, this article in Red & Black on the CURO symposium reminded me that, while they are heavily engaged in everything from genetics to particle physics, UGA students conduct research in much more than just the hard sciences. Brendan Boyle, a junior mass media arts and film studies major, presented his paper…
What's it like to be a walk-on football player and a biology major in the Franklin College?  Sophomore Ben Reynolds knows and here's a terrific new video featuring him and his experiences at UGA.
Interesting, if counter-intuitive, research on the implications of mentoring, from the department of psychology: Networking within an organization and having a mentor are widely thought to promote career success, but a new University of Georgia study finds that African-American men don't receive the same measurable benefits from these professional connections that Caucasians do. Study co-author Lillian Eby, a professor in the Industrial-…
