Our Mission

Providing a framework for the comprehensive study of the physical world and the chemistry of nature to academic disciplines primarily concerned with numerical methods, the Division of the Physical & Mathematical Sciences comprises six departments offering BS, MS, and PhD degree programs.

The Division consists of the departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Statistics.

Our Departments

The Department of Chemistry strives for an ideal balance between knowledge creation and knowledge dissemination in the chemical sciences, with a focus on student training and education.

We offer the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and our graduates have gone on to prestigious positions in academia, industry, and at private and federal research labs.

We emphasize studies in Crust and Mantle Dynamics, Earth Systems History, Environmental Geosciences, and Geoarchaeology. In these areas, we pursue the understanding of geological processes, the optimal use of earth resources, and the reconstruction of earth's history to illuminate its future.

We are a vibrant mathematical community and one of the largest departments at UGA in UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The department has particularly active research groups in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, geometry, number theory, and topology.

Provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of physics and supply a foundation for further study in almost any science discipline.

We offer the BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Statistics, one of the fastest growing STEM disciplines in the country.  Our students receive a solid grounding in statistical theory and applications.  Graduates go on to exciting data science careers in industry, government, and academia.
