General Education Core Curriculum

The General Education Core Course Approval System allows departments to propose new courses to be considered for inclusion in Areas II-V of the General Education Core Curriculum. The system includes approval routing that allows new core course proposals be routed to department heads, deans, and the General Education Subcommittee for consideration. This process is facilitated by Curriculum Systems within the Office of the Registrar. 

The General Education Core Curriculum is comprised of the following areas:  

  • Area I:  Foundation Courses  (9 hours)

    • Courses are specified and must comply with the University System Board of Regents policy. More advanced mathematical courses may be required for certain majors.

  • Area II:  Physical Sciences  (3-4 hours)

    • The course should provide sufficient breadth and depth in the physical sciences such that if this was the only physical science course a student took, the student would have awareness of how knowledge is constructed in the physical sciences.

  • Area II:  Life Sciences (3-4 hours)

    • The course should provide sufficient breadth and depth in the life sciences such that if this was the only life science course a student took, the student would have awareness of how knowledge is constructed in the life sciences.

  • Area III:  Quantitative Reasoning  (3-4 hours)

    • The primary focus of the course should be on quantitative analysis, not on an area in which quantitative analysis is secondary to some other course objective.

    • Programming courses should focus on algorithmic thinking, logic/decision structures, and information storage structures.

    • Data science courses should involve a focus on data analysis and relationship identification. Tools of statistical analysis are introduced and used as appropriate.

    • Courses that emphasize historical or social aspects of technology or computing, design without algorithmic coding emphases, or software package skills are not acceptable.

  • Area IV:  World Languages and Global Culture (9 hours)

    • The course content should provide evidence of a connection to contemporary cultures and people(s) outside the U.S.

  • Area IV:  Humanities and the Arts (3 hours)

    • The course should engage with the material either broadly or in depth as long as the focus is on the construction of knowledge in the area.

  • V:  Social Sciences  (9 hours)

    • The course should provide sufficient breadth and depth in the social sciences such that if this was the only social science course a student took, the student would have awareness of how knowledge is constructed in the social sciences.

To submit a request, please follow the steps below:
  • Click here to browse a list of courses approved to fulfill the General Education Core Curriculum. 
  • Please use the General Education Abilities Sample Form as a guideline when submitting your request.
  • Log into the General Education Core Course Approval System using your department or college/school General Education System login ID and password.
    • Choose the "Department Initiator" role
    • Choose the "Begin a General Education Course Proposal" task
    • Click "Proceed"
    • Select the prefix of the course being proposed
    • Select the course ID of the course being proposed
    • Complete course information can be viewed in CAPA by clicking the link at the top of the page, or the course objectives and topical outline can be viewed by clicking the provided link
    • Check the boxes on the form next to the learning outcomes that apply to the course. Boxes can be selected in more than one area. Additional information can be entered in the "Justification" text boxes. 
    • Once the form is completed, click "Submit to Department Head"
  • If you are unable to submit a course through the General Education System, you will need to submit a Curriculum Request Form.
    • When you click on the link above, the form will open in a browser.  You will need to save the form and open in Adobe Acrobat.  This will allow you to complete the fillable form and add your signature.

    • Please submit your PDF request to: April Brown at albrown@uga.edu.
  • Once the Franklin College Curriculum Committee has reviewed and approved the request, it will then be emailed to the Office of Curriculum Systems and to the Department Head.  No further action will be needed.
