Spotlight on the Arts Opening Celebration After-Party

Lamar Dodd School of Art

Solo Performances by Sam Hillmer & Patrick Higgins of ZS

In conjunction with Spotlight on the Arts & Slingshot Athens, The Dodd Galleries presents a performance by New York experimental musicians Sam Hllmer & Patrick Higgins of ZS. The band ZS has been labeled everything from no-wave to brutal-prog to post-minimalist. Their main concern is making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs creates works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time.

Athens-based cellist, Alec Livaditis and Atlanta-based soundmaker, Chelsea Dunn, will play a set at 8:30, followed by solo performances by Sam Hillmer and Patrick Higgins of Zs.

“Zs is a band; it’s also a perpetual itch, an index of unease around the restrictions of genre in New York experimental music.” - Ben Ratliff, New York Times

“Zs play meticulous, exacting music in which no note sounds accidental or hastily arranged. It’s a fact worth keeping in mind as they also seem compelled to scramble everything that ‘meticulous’ and ‘exacting’ might mean." - Wall Street Journal

Sam Hillmer will give a lecture at the school in S150 on Wednesday, November 4 at 2:30pm
