The UGA research enterprise

With UGA climbing the list of worldwide universities recognized for the number of utlity patents granted in 2015, the University of Georgia Research Foundation is impacting the state and the nation as perhaps never before. UGARF performs important functions in support of the research enterprise at UGA, as the named party to sponsored research agreements for projects at UGA. Through Innovation Gateway, UGARF protects, markets, and licenses its intellectual property portfolio throughout Georgia and the U.S. and across the globe:

The UGA patents issued in 2015 included those covering a potential therapeutic for the gastrointestinal infection Cryptosporidiosis, a candidate antiviral therapeutic for hepatitis B, a wound healing product, engineered bacterial strains that facilitate biofuel production, and novel phosphors that may be used in multiple industrial applications, including the production of enhanced LED lighting.

The complex machinery of federal funding, IP, laboratory facilities, faculty time, graduate assistants and more that is involved in transforming promising research ideas into a public good represents a Herculean effort by teams of experts at every stage. Congratulations to all of our dedicated researchers and to the many administrators and staff who support and stand with them to fulfill the research enterprise that is moving society forward.
