UGA Classics in Rome

UGA Classics in Rome is currently underway under the direction of Professors Elena Bianchelli and Chris Gregg, a Mellon Professor of Classical Archaeology.

Participants and professors live in a small family-run, centrally located hotel in Rome and in their six-week stay they become intimately connected with the city and the Italian life style. Classes are held every morning right in front of the monuments and they focus on the archaeology, the arts, and the history of Rome. Students also take day trips to the Etruscan necropolis of Tarquinia and Cerveteri, to Hadrian’s Villa and the gardens of Villa d’Este, and a five-day trip to the Bay of Naples where they visit Caserta, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, and other major sites. Over the weekends, students have the opportunity to travel to various others locations such as Florence, Venice, and Cinqueterre.

Some of this year’s group of 17 students are classics and/or classical languages majors. The rest come from all areas of the University: History, art history, anthropology, English, Romance languages, pre-med, ecology, mathematics, and business. As in past years, the program has attracted students from other institutions: George Mason University and Kenyon College.

The program, which started in 1970 and is one of the oldest study abroad programs at UGA, is rated as one of the best and has a large number of alumni that consider it a turning point in their college career.
