Lecture: Naomi Norman

Miller Learning Center, Reading Room

Naomi Norman, associate vice president of instruction, will present "It's All About the Journey: From the FYO to Experiential Learning at UGA" as part of the Center for Teaching and Learning's Award Winning Faculty Series.

The FYO seminar offers each instructor a wonderful opportunity to engage first-year students, to introduce them to an academic life and to help set them on a successful path to graduation. In other words, it is the first step on an actual odyssey. But unlike Odysseus’ 10-year journey to return home after the Trojan War, the FYO is a one-semester, one credit-hour journey. Although the time frame is much shorter, the first semester journey of a first year student includes challenges that are every bit as daunting as those that Odysseus encountered. From matriculation to graduation, each student faces her own Cyclops, Scylla, Charybdis and Lotus-Eaters. Against these forces, Odysseus had his wits; UGA faculty have active learning, flipped classrooms, group work and all manner of pedagogies.
