About this Degree

The BSEd in Mathematics Education prepares students to teach mathematics in Grades 6-12. The program is structured to include course work in mathematics and statistics as well as courses related to secondary school mathematics curriculum and instruction. In addition, students spend time in local schools during each semester of the program. Graduates of the program are eligible for initial teacher certification in Georgia.

We also partner with the Mathematics Department to offer a dual degree–a BSEd in Mathematics Education and a BS in Mathematics. Please choose the Dual Degree link under the BSEd tab above for more information about this program.

Mathematics Education is a restricted major admitting only 25 students per semester. To begin the program in the fall semester, a completed application must be submitted by the first Friday in November. To begin the program in the spring semester, a completed application must be submitted by the first Friday in April.

What you will learn

The Mathematics Education program at the University of Georgia offers a nationally accredited program that prepares students to teach mathematics in secondary school (6-12). The program emphasizes a blend of mathematical studies, professional studies, and practical experiences in schools. Students study the latest developments in curriculum and instruction, including instructional technology. Graduates of the program receive the Bachelor of Science in Education degree and are eligible for initial certification in Georgia.

Apart from preparing students to teach mathematics in grades 6-12, the program prepares students for graduate studies in mathematics and for careers that call for mathematics, computer science, and interpersonal skills.
